Single User Mode

Dropping to single user mode
shutdown now
you will then see daemons get shutdown users notified etc. then see the following prompt

Entering single-user mode.                                  
To remount the / filesystem read-write, run these commands: 
    /sbin/fsck -y /                                         
    /sbin/mount -uw /                                       
To proceed with multi-user boot, enter "exit" at the shell  
Enter full pathname of shell or RETURN for /bin/sh:         

To return to multi-user mode press
Ctrl+D

Alternatively,
boot -s
during the boot prompt will boot to single user mode as well.

NOTE: Running the command
halt
will shutdown the machine in single or multi-user mode.
